Only a few pathologists can not effectively serve 14 million Cambodian people. Cambodia needs more pathologists! What is more, Cambodia needs cooperation from pathologists in other countries, particularly developed ones. "Pathologists without frontier" will bring good cooperation among Cambodian pathologists and pathologists from other countries. Once a year, several foreign pathologists should be invited to work in Cambodia's pathology labs so as to help with some trainings and experience exchange with Cambodian pathologists. This will not only help to produce new generations of Cambodian pathologists but also to promote working standard and quality in Cambodia's pathology labs.

I am strongly committed to making this dream come true in the near future, as Jason Kaufmann says, "the best way to predict the future is to create it."

My gratitute goes to my dearest mother, without whom I wouldn't have had this brilliant future.

My heartfelt appreciation goes to prof. dr. Piet Pattyn for his coordination and support in my Pathology training in Belgium and to prof. dr. Claude Cuvelier for his direct supervision and transfer of knowledge.

Sichuan Reeling From Quake

The worst earthquake to hit China in three decades leaves thousands of people waiting anxiously for news of the missing, many of whom are believed trapped beneath collapsed buildings. Authorities say the toll is now around 12,000, and rising.

Survivors of the worst earthquake to hit China in decades are anxiously awaiting news of missing loved ones as rescue workers struggle to reach tens of thousands of people believed trapped under collapsed buildings in the southwestern province of Sichuan.

“The building is three storeys high, with 18 classrooms. All of a sudden, the building collapsed,” one volunteer rescue worker from Dujiangyan, a former beauty spot in the south of Wenchuan county, said.

“Many people have died. The People’s Liberation Army are rescuing those trapped under the rubble. Such a terrible tragedy. Many parents are having to wait here for news,” he said.
A driver from the same town said many people were hanging around in open, public spaces of the former tourist town. “Most of the buildings are gone. There are now a lot of big holes in the ground,” he said.

In neighboring Pangzhou city, 10,000 villagers are believed trapped in mountainous areas. Most of the buildings have collapsed, and rescue teams and disaster relief supplies are unable to get to the city for the time being. An official from the local municipal government said: “We are waiting for the deployment of relief resources and rescue teams now. This is a line for asking for assistance. We are very busy now, so I can’t say too much.” Death toll at 12,000 and rising. China’s official media now say the earthquake death toll in Sichuan province has topped 12,000 and could surge higher. The vice governor of the southwestern province, Li Chengyun, said the death toll was based on incomplete figures as of Tuesday afternoon. He said 26,206 people were injured, up to 3.5 million homes destroyed, and more than 12,000 had been killed. Tens of thousands remain unreachable and unaccounted for. The official Xinhua news agency also said more than 18,645 people were buried under rubble in a single city, Mianyang, with 3,629 people killed there. Mianyang borders the epicenter of the earthquake.

A group of 10 Doctors and other authority people in Kg. province cooperated and organized a Health Day for villagers in Chbar Ampov village of Kg. province on Sunday 9th December 2007. We departed from Dr. Lok Choy's house at 6.30 a.m and arrive in Paav district at around 10 a.m. Then we took a small boat to Chbar Ampov village. Though it was quite a long trip, we had fun all the way there, both on and off board. The consultation and treatment stated at 11.30 a.m and ended at 2.30 p.m with satisfaction and smiles. We had very late lunch time then, yet very fun. All in all, the mission was an amazing experience for us all.

The Fistival of the Sampeah Preah Khe , Auk Ambok , and Bandet Prortib

The Fistival of the Sampeah Preah Khe and Auk Ambok
Sampeah Preah Khe means the salutation to the moon. Auk Ambok means the offering of bananas and Ambok. In the first phrase of Pali scripture of Baromathatibani Atha Katha Chariya Bedak, it is said that the Great Buddha was born on the full moon as Sasa Bandit or "Wise man born in the form of the Rabbit". To reflect this belief the Khmer people celebrate it annually during the full moon of the Khe Kadek. They prepare special cakes, Ambok and bananas to salute the moon.
In 2006 and 2007, on the full moon day of Water Festival, the National School of Fine Arts organized this ceremony in which hundreds of Cambodian people and foreigners participated. Most of the participants, particularly the NSFA students, wore traditional costumes, while the public participants wore smart casual. I was one of the public participants of both years. The gathering started at 6 pm with the offering of fruits and coconuts and some chit-chat. At 6.30 pm, after all the speeches were delivered, the Chhay Yam group, performers showing off with long drums and in comic masks and exaggerated hair styles and make-up, played its part. Preceding the time of Auk Ambok, a preacher told the history of the ceremony and described the purpose of offering all the food and drink, and we did some praying together until it was time of Auk Ambok. When it was time, the preacher counted 3 to 1 and we fed each other the Ambok and bananas and we drank the coconut juice offered at the beginning of the gathering. Following the formal ceremony, we danced traditional dances and sang songs. The ceremony ended at 9 pm with the parade of small illuminated boats, led by the Chhay Yam group, to the Mekong river. The boats were made from banana trees decorated with colored plastic and candles. Overally, the ceremony created an unforgettable historical and joyous moments for all participants and organizers.

1. In July 2007, I was selected as one of the 40 ASEAN inspiring youths to be featured in the 40th ASEAN Anniversary book. There is one thing i am proud of about this achievement. That is i have achieved my study and career goals stated in the published article.

2. In September 2007, I was granted a study visit to Belgium in Gent University and Hospital.

3. In October 2007, I was granted a Specialization sholarship in Pathology and a promised position at Khmer-Russian Friendship hospital. The training lasts for 4 years, 3 years in Belgium and another year in France. I strongly believe that i will be very useful and potential human resource upon my return.

3. In November 2007, I got good news from one of my best friends, Theany. She's going to get married on February 17, 2007.

4. In December 2007, I passed the entrance exam to another Medical Specialization. How lucky i am! I was allowed to combine the two scholarships and get 2 degrees, one recognized all over Europe and the other recognized in Cambodia.

5. On January 27, 2008, it's my engagement day!

Celebrate with me all the successes and achievements! A message from these achievements is, " There is nothing we can not do as long as we believe we can!"

On Saturday February 3, 2007, The Book Donation Project was successfully implemented for the first time at the Preah Sihanouk Varramann Secondary School in Saang district of Kandal province, which is located about 30 km south of Phnom Penh. Ms. Hav Monirath, CPY 2005, has initiated and coordinated the project, and, with support from Ex-CPYs and friends, a number of books were collected; many thanks to the book donors and collectors. Over 20 ex-CPYs and friends participated and assisted this “Reading for Future” workshop, which consisted of interactive activities (role play, discussion and presentation), with approximately 100 students. 100 reading books were donated to the library of the Sihanouk Varramann Secondary School.

On Monday night 8th January 2007, ex-CPYs gathered at Mondial restaurant for our former President's wedding. It might have been the happiest wedding party we've ever attended. CPYs cheered, sang, and danced to wish the new couple a happy marriage and family. Even more surprsingly, right after the wedding party, some CPYs set up a plan to help Chanthol and Cheng, CPYs 05, get along well again after their misunderstanding.

It seems just like yesterday that SIC was established, but it has been over two years now. Our two-year presidency term has come to an end by the end of 2006. Three outstanding candidates were identified – Mr. Chan Sophal (NL ’04 and former 2nd Vice President of SIC), Mr. Kang Rithisal (CPY’03 and former Head of Social and Recreational Affairs of SIC), and Mr. Hor Samnang (NL’05). A date was set for the next General Assembly for ex-CPYs to cast their votes - Sunday, January 14, 2007.

Unlike its first election, for this second mandate election, the general assembly will only elect the president. Upon his/her victory, the president him/herself shall immediately convene and announce his board members; therefore, those who expect to win the election are advised to think of his/her board members in advance. Usually the board members are chosen among ex-CPYs who have been active in SIC activities.

The General Assembly successfully took place on the set date, presided over by H. E. Chey Chap, Under- Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and H.E Lak Sam Ath, Director of Youth and Sports. On the day, more than 70 ex-CPYs from batches ranging from batch 97 to batch 2006 attended the SIC General Assembly. It was a good time for reunion, but it was also a time to seriously think about all the three presidential candidates and their commitment and ability to lead SIC. CPYs enthusiastically voted for their preferred candidate and we finally found our new president – Mr. Kang Rithisal.

It should be noted that the president must win a majority voice of two thirds of the eligible members present, or he/she cannot take over the position. Mr. Rithisal, however, could get more than 70% of the votes on the first round, which amazingly turned him into the very trusted new president of SIC. Immediately following his nomination, Rithisal, announced his executive committee members comprising of those as follows:

- Batch 2000: Mr. Heng Chantha, Vice-President
- Batch 2004: Mr. Sreang Kimlee, Secretary General

- Batch 2002: Ms. Chea Visitheary, Financial Officer
- Batch 2005: Ms. Pen Sothea, Treasurer
- Batch 2005: Mr. Chea Visithyro, Media Officer
- Batch 2005: Mr. Srun Chanthol, Social Affairs Officer
- Batch 2005: Ms. Lar Sopheak, Public Relations Officer
- Batch 2005: Ms. Hav Monirath, Member Relations Officer

SSEAYP' 05 1-year anniversary

On November 8 last year, SSEAYP ' 05 journey began, and on that day, we stepped on our pretty, charming Nippon Maru for the first time. We, CPYs, never forget that moment of time when we felt most excited and honored as Cambodian delegates to ASEAN countries and Japan. Today, November 8, 2006, all of us again recall our spirit and memories of SSEAYP ' 05. At Witking House Bubble Tea, where we usually meet, we celebrate our 1-year SSEAYP '05 anniversary. The 11th Asian Children's Culture Festival in Cambodia (ACCF)

The 11th ACCF, sponsored by Santi Volunteer Association (SVA), was successfully held in Cambodia from 21st-28th of October 2006 in Sihanouk Ville and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Last year, it was held for 1 week in Siem Reap, Angkor. It is a program which gathers poor, disadvantaged children and gives them a chance to get to know friends from other countries as well as exchange their culture. This year, 100 children from 6 countries- Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Japan- joined this program. ACCF is divided into two major activities, international camp and cultural performance. During 3 days camping in Sihanouk Ville, children enjoyed games, day fair, making craft, and drawing. And, after the camping, they came back to Phnom Penh where they had their dances rehearsal and cultural performance. The culture night was presided by H.E Dr. Kol Pheng, Senior Minister and Minister of Education Youth and Sports. It was such a great event ever!

This year, 4 SSEAYP ex-PYs volunteered as camp and team leaders. It was such hard work for us, ex-PYs, but we had so much fun and we are proud of ourselves to have had this chance of helping the poor from various countries especially Cambodian children. One problem that we encountered during the program was that he had to use body language with those participating children all the time since they could not understand English. However, to us, it was great experience and we hope that we can participate in such or similar programs that benefit our society again in the near future. CPYs rock!

Our beloved friends, Lida and Chamroeun, came back from REN' 06 the day before yesterday (Monday 16th Oct.) at 7.40 p.m. They brought back good memories and new experience.
According to Lida, all REN' 06 participants and IYEO staff were very happy about SIC newsletters. They feel so proud of SIC and CPYs.

CPYs06 rock!!!

Yesterday evening was the biggest event ever for CPYs06 after their 3 months' preparation for SSEAYP. They launched a pilot exhibition and cultural performance at Russian Cultural Center in front of Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports. Presided by H.E Lork Ta Kol Pheng, the event was even more enjoyable and fruitful. There were more than 200 visitors, and of course some of them were our active ex-PYs who stood all the way through to see the whole performance since they sacrificed their seats for the large number of audience. One dance after another, the event became more and more interesting and enjoyable. Our Masters of Ceromony did make the audience applause and blast into laughter each time they came onto the stage!

Well, congratulations to CPYs 06 for their great job that evening! It was such a fantastic night! Everyone went home smiling and admiring them, hoping all the PYs will bring back great success to Cambodia. Cheers CPYs!
